Average recipe. Easy to make, but the pre-mixed taco seasoning has loads of salt. I would suggest making your own spice mixture and using that instead.

I planned on serving this over rice for my teenage son. He ended up bringing in 4 of his friends who also wanted to eat...as teenage boys often do ( chuckle ). They ate every last bit of it and wanted more. I did change a little - I added a 1/4 cup of ketchup, a 1/2 cup of salsa and some garlic powder to it. It was REALLY very good.

I do not even know what to say about this recipe other than YUCK! Are they tacos or meatloaf. I had to give it a one star because they will not let you submit it, but it does not even deserve that.

As simple as it is to make great taco meat from scratch (and far less salty and more tasty) with 6 ozs. of tomato paste, 1 can of Ro-Tel tomatoes (undrained), 2 tsp. cumin, salt, 2 tsp. chili powder, and 1/2 tsp black pepper, this take on taco meat isn't something I'd ever use again...and certainly not something I'd serve to adults.

forget the katchup, use salsa instead its amazing!!
06/26/2005
It was just too sweet... and I didn't even use as much ketchup as it called for. The next time I make this I'll only put in 1/8 cup of ketchup.
10/29/2007
Simple and better tasting than just adding a package of taco seaoning. Vadie
04/11/2004
Pretty good and super easy! Could use a little something though, maybe next time I will add a little garlic and salsa to the mix.
03/31/2011
I used ground beef, onion, taco seasoning mix 1 (from this site) and taco sauce in place of the ketchup and water.
05/19/2010
I didn't quite follow the recipe, but this was SUCH a HUGE hit! browned the meat and added ingredients to crockpot and let cook for @2 hours. used ground turkey. used six pounds for a party. used one large can diced tomatoes and added @1/2 cup ketchup. made this for birthday party and was perfect!

Very simple easy recipe.
01/07/2011
I don't get it. It's almost like sloppy joe's with the ketchup. Taco's with ketchup?????????
05/03/2010
EASY TOO

Good basic recipe that is quick and easy to make on a week night, without sacracficing flavor. I did add salsa instead of just diced onion. The ketchup seemed to thicken up the seasoning on the beef and made the taste more satisfying! Thanks for the recipe, I will definitely put ketchup in with the seasoning now everytime I make tacos (which is a usual Monday night "mexican night" thing around our house). I almost forgot, we love to take a soft taco, sprinkle some shredded mexican cheeses on it then place crunchy corn tortilla and warm them until the cheese melts. A double decker shell. It seems to hold together better for that *CRUNCH*

This was good. Even with the ketchup. Which I had my doubts about before I ate it. I used AR Taco seasoning I by Bill Echols and only a third of the onion. I added more water and let this simmer while my rice was cooking. Thanks this was easy and made a nice meal.
04/12/2011
I doubled the recipe
03/14/2010
Excellent tacos! I added salsa in the last step, and it was delicious.
04/15/2010
Pretty Good. I was afraid this was going to end up tasting like a sloppy joe with the ketchup. It did have a sloppy joe kind of hint of flavor but over all it turned out well. All 4 kids liked it. When it's a hit with all the kids, I have to give it 5 stars.
11/01/2009
Needs salsa added, shredded cheese added-and take out the ketchup. Also add some diced green chili's
06/03/2009
Yeah, the ketchup component needs to be eliminated from this recipe. Made the tacos too sweet and tasted bad!
01/11/2010
It was just ok.

Very simple easy recipe.

i cooked this for dinner but instead of tacos i made burritos! i cooked some spanish rice and cut up some iceberg lettuce with some sour cream; they were delicious!! my husband absolutely loved. i didnt add as much ketchup but did add some tomato sauce. i will definitely make this again in the future! thank you for the recipe!

I was a little scared to try this recipe at first, but the end result was pretty tasty. It reminded me sort of a cross between tacos and sloppy joes. We enjoyed this as something different to my traditional taco meat recipe. I will definately use this recipe again from time to time! Thanks for posting :)

My son and I made these together tonight, and they were easy and great! The whole family enjoyed them. We doubled up the salsa, and cut down the ketchup just a bit. Good nacho topper too!
12/06/2009
Quick and easy and delicious! I used 1/3 cup of ketchup rather than the 1/2 cup.
08/28/2003
This was a very easy recipe that was really good. Not only does it make a good taco sauce for tacos, it is great on "Loaded Nachos" and as a chili sauce on coney dogs.
02/01/2004
I doubled the recipe for a super bowl party and it was a hit. I put out taco shells, but it was most popular as a nacho topper! Delicious with rotel dip, lettuce, tomato and shredded mexican blend cheese. I transfered to a crock pot after simmering and it did great on the "keep warm" setting all evening. Will definitely definitely make again for future potlucks!

Very tasty and very easy. The perfect weeknite meal. I used ground turkey instead of beef and it was still good.
11/04/2009
Excellent dish. I used Elk burger and it was GREAT.
06/29/2004
Wonderful meat for tacos. I added vegetarian style refried beans in to it for some added oomph. Excellent!
09/06/2004
I WAS A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT THE KETHCHUP..BUT THESE WERE REALLY GOOD..I WILL MAKE THESE AGAIN.
09/22/2004
Simple and it tasted pretty good. At least my kids ate it. I added some fresh ground pepper.
10/09/2009
Too much ketchup in my opinion. Not bad, but probably will never make it again.
08/28/2003
This doesn't get any easier. I didn't use the ketchup because it would have made it too sweet for my liking. Great mix for tacos. Thanks
04/13/2009
I love making these tacos except I dont use ketchup, I use regular tomato sauce and spice that up with garlic salt and pepper. Serve with sour cream, cheese and salsa!!!
03/23/2012
YUMMY! my husband raved over it! He wants me to make this every week!
04/06/2009
I used my own taco seasoning from this site; Taco Seasoning II and the ketchup flavour was a different twist to the meat taste! We thought it was pretty good. THX
02/18/2009
1/4C ketchup and a 1/4C chunky salsa - yum! Great on nachos!
01/05/2009
I like this better if it is made with Old El Paso medium taco sauce, it gives the meat a great flavor.
03/21/2013
I tried this recipe with a twist! I tried Johnsonville Sausage. It was delicious! We made some homemade taco seasoning and tacos the way we like them, just with sausage. It was a hit! We will definitely do it again!
08/31/2005
This beef was pretty good but there was something not quite right about it. I think it was that the seasoning mix was just a bit too salty for our tastes. I added some extra chili powder to give it a little bit more of a kick. I will probably make this again, but I think next time I might cut back a bit on the mix, add a bit more chili powder and maybe add a little salsa. Thanks for the recipe.
05/04/2013
Delicious! Only change I made was to swap the ketchup for salsa. Quick and easy recipe.
02/09/2006
I used less ketchup and served order rice. I also added salsa and cheese. Very easy and quick to make.
08/30/2006
this tastse great!i added worcester sause on rice.
11/06/2007
If ketchup is too sweet, use a can of tomato sauce. I cook the meat with minced garlic and onion, add taco seasoning and tomato sauce. I usually add black beans as well. If you don't want to use taco seasoning, use chili powder, cumin, and garlic.
08/02/2014
I was skeptical....but this was FANTASTIC! I used Taco Seasoning I from this website and used salsa instead of ketchup. Home run. I will absolutely make this again and recommend it. Omit the water though.
07/21/2012
Flavorful and delicious! I made my own taco seasoning (found a recipe on allrecipes. Very easy to make!
09/07/2008
This was great! Me and the Husband loved it in our tacos! Thanks for the recipe!
07/03/2012
Great recipe. I did add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and replaced the ketchup with salsa and a small can of diced tomatoes and green chilies. I made my own taco seasoning (got the recipe from here too). So yummy! My hubby doesn't like ketchup, so it was perfect!
08/27/2008
This was great! I added 1/2 cup of salsa as well and it turned out fabuloso!!

Being from California and now living in Maine I really miss good tacos, so every now and then I get a real yen for a couple. When I fix a recipe for the first time I almost always prepare it according to the recipe but this time I really wish I had used my instincts and added a small can of Ro-tel tomatoes with green chilies and a clove of minced garlic and omitted the ketchup altogether, it added a sweetness that was hard to correct. Needless to say, I had a lot left over so the next day I doctored it up and made Chimachangas...not bad. :-)

Horrible.

Made for my fiance and my brother. they LOVED the meat. I decided to make this without any onions, added shredded cheese and grape tomato slices ... it was perfect. Also added side of re-fried beans and rice. Perfect!
08/20/2008
this just gives a little spunck to the seasoning packet, we also add corn to ours
05/05/2019
We liked this recipe. I especially liked that I could make it from items I usually have in my pantry. I made one change. I used a taco spice mix called taco seasoning 1 from this website. I leave the salt out when I make it. I make more than one serving at a time and keep it in a jar with a screw top lid. This taco meat recipe is quick and easy to make.
07/15/2018
sorta made it ! I used ground beef and ground turkey. I added chopped garlic and onions and diced sweet peppers and a can of diced tomatoes and all the seasonings plus extra cumin seasonings. served with sour cream, quacomole and grated cheese. no ketchup.
06/14/2021
Made as written except that I took the advice of some other reviewers by replacing 1/4 cup of the ketchup with salsa. Still a little sweet for my taste but this would be a hit with the kiddos.
09/28/2020
the meat is good and the tacos is good
01/15/2016
Loved it
03/12/2017
My guests were very happy. Will make it again.
08/09/2013
i loved the ease in the mix, used homemade taco seasoning minus the salt. used soft taco shells with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, salsa and some sour cream and they were so yummy
05/01/2020
so easy and so delicious! I love it!
06/24/2008
Very good! My friends and I devoured it!
09/22/2015
I used the recipe and substituted the onions with green onions. Also used 3/4 hot salsa. Added some garlic onion salt and Lawrys seasoning salt. I used velvetta grated cheese and diced tomatoes and lettuce with sour cream! It was SCRUMPTIOUS
