Pontiac 455 oil clearance........
What I have is a 455 Pontiac with an 11 lb blower, hyd. roller, 6500 "supposed" max rpm deal. Maybe makes 700 at the flywheel. Engine as assembled by a previous builder had .0018-.0020 clearance on the 3.250 mains. Does .0035 sound about right for this application? I know it was too tight, thats for sure......bearings looked polished, journals looked a bit wavy......crankshaft is a cheap ohio 4340 unit. Very little run time on engine.....maybe 150 miles, and a dozen or so butt-kickings. Also.....If I have a set of cran hyd. roller lifters that have minimal run time on them....is there anywhere I can send them to have them disassembled/inspected......and/or rebuilt if need be?

Unless you have a better than factory type oil pump, such as a Titan, I would opt for about .003" on the mains. There is no way to increase the volume on the factory gear to gear oil pumps, and with the 3.25" mains it needs plenty of oil. As for the lifters, call any old Crane vender to get a phone number for the company that bought Crane.

In that case, your good to go! I ran my 474 for about 150 passes, on the strip with just under .004" clearance on the mains, and when it was torn down, everything looked perfect. I was going to put it all back together until I found cracks in two of the saddles. I now have two Indian Adventures tall decks and one standard deck.

i've noticed on some of the aftermarket pontiac stuff that the cranks will have some runout. maybe just a thou, but it's there
