With a tape measurer, measure from the left corner to the right corner of the tv. For the example used below, I wouldn't use a tv smaller than 28 inches in width.
Also, when choosing a tv stand, consider how high off the floor you would like the tv to be. My suggestion is to have a tv stand height at your desired point of view from your sitting area.
For example, if your sofa sits a little lower to the ground, a low-profile tv stand might be best. If your sofa sits a little higher, then you might want a more elevated tv stand.
